1. Concept and Writing
We begin with the basic concepts. This is the stage where characters are created based on their own characteristics and abilities and constraints. Once characters are created, the students go on to create events for these characters. Once events are created, the script writes itself. Writing a script has its own format and language. Learn what the differences are among dialog, cue, parentheticals and action. Learn how to write proper direction and dialog.
2. Pre-Production
Get your drawing boards and pencils. You learn everything from Story Boarding to Location Scouting to Script Breakdown to Character Breakdown and everything else. Don't know how to draw? Don't worry. Stick figures with written names will do just fine. As long as you have an idea of what you're shooting in your shots.
3. Production & Filming
Get ready to get your camera out. Go on location; put your acting face on and... Action! Learn wide, medium and close-up shots. Learn what shot works with what scene based on your storyboards, location, scene breakdown, and many other details. Keep track of all of your shots. Sometimes it may take 10 takes to get a shot just right, sometimes it might take 100 takes. Use your time wisely.
4. Editing and Post Production
Pull all of the tapes you filmed and go to work. Continuity, color correction, film look, audio fixes, soundtrack, and more are done at this stage in production. Figure out if anything else needs to be re-shot; or, even re-written. Go back to the drawing board, make your changes, re-shoot, pickup some shots here and there, and come back to the editing room. Purchase some royalty free music off of the Internet. Music is half of the movie.
5. Marketing and Distribution
Think you're ready for the final step? Is your film watchable? Is it enjoyable? If so, you might have a shot at a film festival. Submit and wait. Use IndieFlix.com to sell your film. Go out on your own and tell your very own story. Watch your film on TV, get a DVD of it for your own pleasure and demo reel, and share it with others. You're a star!
